Chapter 3, Verse 9

यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः । तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर ॥

Translation

Except for action performed as an offering, this world is bound by action. So perform your duty for that sake alone, free of attachment.

Explanation

The word yajna, sacrifice, sounds ceremonial, but the verse is really talking about ordinary work reframed — done not purely for personal gain, but as a kind of contribution to something larger than the self doing it. That reframing alone tends to change how work feels, even when the task itself doesn't change at all.

Reflect

What task today would feel different if you thought of it as an offering rather than a transaction?
