अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् । स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते ॥
Translation
Speech that causes no distress, that is truthful, pleasant, and beneficial, along with regular study, is called the discipline of speech.
Explanation
Four separate conditions are stacked here — not distressing, true, pleasant, and beneficial — and it's genuinely hard for any single sentence to meet all four at once. That's part of the point: careful speech is a real discipline, not a passive default setting most people already have.
