Chapter 2, Verse 27

जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युर्ध्रुवं जन्म मृतस्य च । तस्मादपरिहार्येऽर्थे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥

Translation

Death is certain for the one who is born, and birth is certain for the one who dies. So you should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.

Explanation

There's a useful distinction hiding in this verse between grief over what's genuinely unavoidable and grief over what still has room to change. Sorting a difficulty into one category or the other doesn't remove the feeling, but it does change what kind of response actually makes sense.

Reflect

Is today's worry about something that can still be changed, or something that has already been decided?
