Kartik month, six days after Diwali — typically October or November.

Chhath Puja

What

Chhath Puja spans four days of ritual purity, fasting — including a waterless 36-hour fast for the main day — and standing in a river or water body at both sunset and the following sunrise to make offerings directly to the sun.

Why

Widely practiced across Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, the festival is notable for offering gratitude to a setting sun as well as a rising one — thanking the sun not only for what it's about to give, but for what it has already given, before asking for anything more.

Preparation

  • Prepare for the extended fast if observing it, with medical guidance if needed
  • Locate a river, pond, or accessible water body for the evening and morning offerings
  • Prepare thekua and seasonal fruit as traditional offerings
  • Arrange a clean space for the ritual at home in the days prior
